High cholesterol is a major risk factor for
coronary heart disease (CHD), the leading kil-

develop CHD at some time in their lives.
Almost 13 million Americans already have CHD
or "silent" atherosclerosis, a complication of
narrowing of the blood vessels, which lead to
coronary heart disease (CHD).
The build-up of cholesterol in the blood ves-
sels begins early and increases over time.
Cholesterol is found in food of animal origin,
not food of plant origin. Cholesterol deposits
along the walls of the blood vessels causing
the blood vessels to become less elastic over
time. In other words, hardening of the arter-
ies occurs from extra cholesterol processed
properly by the liver and kidneys.
Symptoms of High Cholesterol:
There are no specific or obvious symptoms of
high cholesterol. Most often, a blood test for
total cholesterol indicates the diagnosis. A
blood test of cholesterol includes LDL (low-
density lipoprotein, bad cholesterol), HDL
(high-density lipoprotein, good cholesterol)
and triglycerides (blood fat).
A total cholesterol level less than 200 milli-
grams per deciliter (mg/dl) is considered "de-
sirable". When the level is above 200 mg/dl,
the risk of CHD (coronary heart disease) is
increased.
Treatment for High Cholesterol:
Reduce total cholesterol level, especially LDL
(bad cholesterol) from blood stream.
Restrict the liver's functions of producing
more cholesterol, have liver absorb more LDL
(bad cholesterol) from the bloodstream and ex-
crete it.
Anti-inflammatory effect. Lowers C-reactive
protein.
C-reactive protein is an indicator of bacter-
ial inflammation of the artery wall. Over 50%
of heart attacks occur in people with normal
cholesterol levels. The latest research sug-
gests that bacterial infection may trigger in-
flammation and cause instability of athero-
sclerotic plaque. Blood clots are then more
likely to form and cause a heart attack or
stroke.

Guggul is an Ayurvedic extract sourced from
the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree of
India. Guggul contains guggulsterones,
